3 Reasons Why We Might Extract a Tooth

Smiling man | Mill District Dental

Let’s start by saying that we understand how difficult the thought of oral surgery can be for our Minneapolis patients. But the need for oral surgery like tooth extraction is often necessary for protecting your overall health.

3 Reasons for Extracting a Tooth

We can assure you that we will exhaust every other option before we decide to extract a tooth. But there are certain instances where oral surgery is our only option:

  • A tooth is damaged beyond repair and cannot be fixed with a filling, restoration, or root canal. In this case, extraction is necessary because we need to protect the long-term health of your teeth and gums.
  • You have missing teeth, and we’ve decided that full dentures are the best solution. If you still have some remaining teeth, they will need to be extracted to make way for the full denture.
  • A wisdom tooth threatens the position of adjacent teeth. Wisdom teeth don’t need to be removed if they are positioned properly. Most problematic wisdom teeth are extracted between the ages of 18 and 24, but they can be removed at any age if necessary.

No More Scary Extractions!

Now that you understand some of the reasons why you might need an extraction, you probably want to know what we do to ensure your comfort. If you haven’t had a tooth extracted in a very long time, you might not be aware that it is no longer a scary procedure.

We’re sensitive to your concerns, and that alone is often enough to put your fears to rest. But, like many people, you may prefer the total comfort of relaxation dentistry. Just let us know that you are feeling anxious, and we will be happy to offer you sedation options like nitrous oxide or oral sedation.

Please call our Minneapolis dental office if you think you may need oral surgery. We will care for you to ensure that your procedure is comfortable and stress-free.
