Children's Dentistry Minneapolis MN
We’re proud of the special way our team interacts with our young patients. Children aren’t just little adults; they’re unique, and they each have their own very specific needs.
We’re committed to providing children of all ages with state-of-the-art dental care in a friendly and safe environment. Patient education is an essential part of what we do at Mill District Dental, and we’ll work with your child to help them understand how important it is to practice good oral hygiene at home.
One visit will convince you that there isn’t anyone else you would want to care for your children’s teeth. We’re very honored that our families entrust their precious children to us.
The All-Important First Visit
The American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend establishing a dental home for your child by one year of age. If you and your child have an established relationship with a specific dentist, you’re more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care.
If your child is nervous about their dental visit, we can help. We want your child to enjoy getting to know Dr. Peters and our team so that they’re comfortable with us at all times. Our “happy visits” are a great first step in getting your child used to their new surroundings.
First visits are very low-key. We want to gain your child’s trust at their pace, and what we do during the first visit depends on how receptive he or she is. In general, a typical first visit usually goes as follows:
- We’ll have your little one sit on your lap so they have the security of being close to you in a new environment.
- If your child is receptive, we’ll apply a fluoride varnish and take a quick look at his or her teeth to see if there are any obvious problems.
- We’ll discuss effective brushing techniques, proper diet, and the ways that bottle-feeding and thumb sucking affect your child’s teeth.
We Put Your Child at Ease
We really love treating kids, and it shows. Our Minneapolis dental office is designed with your child’s comfort in mind. From fun toys in the waiting room to TVs in our treatment rooms, we can provide all the fun distractions your child needs to relax. Dr. Peters has a gentle approach and treats kids with respect for their individual needs. Some children have more trouble calming down than others, and if this is the case, we can suggest nitrous oxide to keep your child safe and comfortable during their treatment. You can feel confident that your children’s oral health is in excellent hands at Mill District Dental!
As a parent, you can also help put your child at ease before dental visits. It’s important to focus on the positive aspects of dentistry and avoid using words like “needles,” or “drills” that might cause unnecessary fear. Comments like, “The dentist will show you lots of new, fun things to help you have a pretty smile,” can really help them get excited about their new adventure. Definitely inform your child about the visit and tell them that the dentist will explain everything they need to know and answer their questions.
